Vendor comparison
Cloudflare WAF vs Akamai App & API Protector: pricing compared
Edge-network WAF shortlist. Cloudflare is self-serve, published, fast to deploy. Akamai is named-account, quote-only, and embedded in long-running enterprise relationships. The technology overlap is large; the buying motion is opposite.

Decision in one paragraph
Cloudflare wins on deploy speed and price transparency. Akamai wins on enterprise footprint, especially in banking, government, and media where the relationship pre-dates the WAF decision. Pick Cloudflare to deploy this quarter. Pick Akamai when WAF is one item on a multi-product Akamai contract.
Side by side
Cloudflare WAF
- Self-serve sign-up, deploy via DNS change in under an hour.
- Published plans from $0 (Free) to $250/mo (Business), Enterprise quote-only.

- Global Anycast network with broad regional presence.
Akamai App & API Protector
- Named-account sales motion, every contract is custom.
- Industry-leading edge footprint, particularly strong in regulated industries.
- Bot Manager Premier is a deep, mature, separately-priced add-on.
- App & API Protector bundles WAF + bot + API + DDoS in one product line.
- EdgeWorkers for compute, but the developer tooling is enterprise-oriented.

Direct answer
Which is cheaper at typical traffic?
Cloudflare is cheaper at every published tier because Akamai publishes nothing. Below the Cloudflare Enterprise line the comparison is not close on price. At the Enterprise line both are quote-only and depend on negotiating room, multi-year commit, and bundle scope.

Switching cost
If you are already on one and considering the other
Akamai-to-Cloudflare migrations require re-issuing certs, repointing DNS, re-tuning managed rules to the Cloudflare engine, and re-writing any EdgeWorkers code as Cloudflare Workers. Expect 4-12 weeks of engineering for a property with custom rules. Cloudflare-to-Akamai migrations are similar in scope but typically include a named professional-services engagement from Akamai.
